Each city may establish a department of law, which is headed by the chief legal officer of the city.

The city attorney is the head of the legal department in a third class city (IC 36-9-4-11), the chief legal officer is appointed by the mayor, must be admitted to the practice of law in Indiana and reside in the county of which the city is located.

The city attorney manages the legal affairs of the city.
