Police Department

The Decatur Police Department serves a population of 9,400 people and is staffed by 17 Full Time Officers, six Reserve Officers, a Chief Clerk, and an Administrative Secretary.  We are a 24/7, 365 days a year department.  We are located at 112 S. 7th Street in Decatur.

Since going to a county dispatch system in August of 2013, our office is open to the public from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.  After hours and on weekends, an officer may be dispatched by contacting central dispatch at the Adams County Sheriff Department. Some of the services we provide, in addition to normal law enforcement work, are:

  • Local Background Checks for Employment
  • Drop Box for Unwanted Medications

DPD Accepting Applications

The Decatur Police Department is accepting applications for the position of full time police officer.

Applications will be available for pick up Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., starting October 2 through October 27, 2017, at the Decatur Police Department, 112 S. 7th Street, Decatur, Indiana, 46733.

Applications must be returned by 4 p.m. on October 31, 2017 in person or by mail. Email applications will not be accepted.

Starting base salary is $42,504.00 After one year, the salary will increase to $43,504.00 (2017). Benefits include paid vacation and holidays, paid majority of medical.

Applicants must be a US citizen; possess a high school diploma or GED; be at least 21 years old and have not reached 36 years of age by date of hire; have no criminal convictions or domestic violence offices. Traffic citations are infractions and not criminal offenses, unless charged as misdemeanors/felonies. Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record. Possess an honorable discharge if prior military experience.

  • Applicants must be able to pass a physical agility and written test.
  • Qualifying applicants will be given an oral interview.
  • Qualifying applicants must pass a drug screen and background check.
  • Applicants must pass a medical and psychological exam.
  • Applicants must be able to complete the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within one year of hire.
  • Both new applicants and lateral transfers will be considered.
